Tips to Choose a Perfect Diamond Drill Bit

The diamond drill bit which is best suited for your needs can depend on a number of factors. These factors will decide what variety and what manufacture you should choose and also how much does it cost you. The costs can vary depending upon the type of drill you finally decide.

The variety of factors that you need to decide is primarily the type of aterial you are drilling and its various properties. These properties can be the hardness of the material, the cost of the material being drilled as well as the thickness of the material. The thickness the material the more pressure and coolant you would need. That means the more specific kind of diamond drill bit you would need.

The factor which is important is the drilling tool to be used and there are a variety of drilling tools available like the hand held drill or the drill press or the CNC drills.

Another thing is the frequency of use. That frequency may determine how much amount you are willing to spend. For example if you are using it very often the electroplate bonded diamond drill bit if fine with you but if you are using it more regularly then the best option is the sintered one. Though the sintered ones are costly but over the lifetime of the use they may prove to less expensive.

The other factor to consider is what the intended use of the hole is. That means whether you need a core or a plug or a proper hole and that in turn determine the kind drill bit you will use.

Based on the above factors you can actually do a cost versus the usage comparison to come up with a proper solution for your needs.

Step by step guide to using the diamond drill bit

Most the materials we have today for which we need to drill holes are glass, tiles or concrete. These are hard materials unlike wood which is not that hard, the most appropriate drill bit is the diamond drill bit. However we need to be very cautious of how we approach drilling a hole into these materials.

Diamond is a hard material which is used nowadays in the industry for drilling holes into the hard materials I mentioned above. The diamond drill bits have diamond on the tip of the drill bit either sintered or bonded. Here is my step by step guide to use the diamond drill bits which will help reduce the damage to the drill bits thereby reducing your cost of procurement of these drill bits.

Now two things, which we will focus on while we learn how to use is the speed of the drilling tool and the other is preventing heat from damaging the tool.

Diamond drill bits are always to be used at slower speeds as fast speed can damage them and also generate more heat. The optimal speeds are 700-1000RPM.The speed can vary based on the overall diameter for example for 6mm you may have the speed at max 2000 RPM.

The next important step is to keep the drill bits cool by use of water. The water will help the drill bit being cooler while the drilling action is going on and also remove the debris of the drilling action as well as help in lubrication. Try using the washing up bottle or any other mechanism to pour water directly onto the surface being drilled.

Slowly and steady wins the game and that applies to your drilling action. Start slowly, tilt the drill bit to scrape the surface a bit and then do the drilling action in a more vertical fashion. The best is to
have template or support on top of the surface being drilled as that will help you prevent from slipping and will gain more strong hold onto the drilling action.

Lastly use gentle pressure to drill and then do a repeatable action of drilling a bit and then taking out the drill and let water do its lubrication. Repeat this process till you find that you have completed
the process and drilled a proper hole.

Diamond Drill Bit Working

Diamond drill bit can be used to cutting holes in the materials like glass, marble, limestone and slate. Within glass it can used to cut the glass jars or stained glass. Diamond drill bit or the diamond core drill bits are the best when you need to use on the new generation materials like the ceramic tiles or
stained glass.

The way it works is that it creates a hole is that the drill bit is actually hollow from the center and hence when you drill it will create a hole which the size of the drill. The size varies from 5/64″ to 4″.
The size of the shaft has to be a standard is 3/8″ so that it can be used in the drill.

However, if you are looking for some special purpose diamond drill bit for example say drilling hole into glass then the diamond drill bit needs to be a bit blunt from the front. The other thing is that they
will operate more slowly than the regular diamond core drill bit. The blunt diamond drill bits have diamonds on the tip and on the side whereas in a core drill the diamonds are at the sides since they do not have a tip.
The way the diamonds are attached to the tip is in two ways one is sintered and the other is bonding. In bonding the diamonds are attached to the drill tip using the electroplating bonding process.

The diamond drill bits as a matter of precaution or rather rule should only be used with very slow drills so that the impact of high drills does not destroy the drill bit or the material. The other important thing to know is that the drill pressure has to be very low too when
using the diamond drill bits.
